Private blood banks in Mumbai have been found to have charged an excess processing fee of Rs 15 crore between 2014 and 2019, according to the State Blood Transfusion Council. As a result of an investigation, the council has collected a penalty of Rs 2.21 crore from 21 banks. Many blood banks were found to be increasing their processing charges by 100% to 500%, in violation of rates set by the National Blood Transfusion Council. The most common offense was overcharging for blood grouping and cross-matching.
